Gates are warmer than walls. How to properly insulate metal garage doors
Even an old, clumsy garage door can be brought to life, making it draft-free and warm, and with almost no increase in its weight. All the materials necessary for this can be brought in your own car without the involvement of delivery services, so insulation will be relatively inexpensive.
Required materials:
- paint or mastic;
- wooden slats;
- self-tapping screws;
- sheet extruded polystyrene foam;
- foil penofol;
- antiseptic impregnation for wood;
- lining.
Gate insulation process
Insulated gates must be painted. Particular attention is paid to the lower part, as it is most susceptible to rotting. It is optimal to use mastic to protect it.
Before laying insulation, it is necessary to make a lath on the gate. It will be fixed around the perimeter of the corner of the frame. Also, one jib is made from the slats for each sash. To do this, the gates are drilled every 25-30 cm. All holes are countersunk.
Then painted or antiseptic-impregnated slats are screwed through them with self-tapping screws.
Between the sheathing it is necessary to lay a sheet of polystyrene foam. The sheets are cut so that they can be inserted between the slats into the spacer. Expanded polystyrene is glued to the mounting foam. If there are gaps left when laying it, they need to be foamed.
The next day, the bulging foam is cut off.
If there is a gap between the gate and the wall, it needs to be sealed. This is also done with polyurethane foam. To prevent it from sticking to the gate frame, it needs to be lubricated with engine oil, or even polish.
The doors themselves should be sprinkled with water. Then the cracks foam from the inside when the gate is closed. It is important not to open them for a couple of hours until the foam hardens.
If the gate does not have a gate, then in order not to waste time sitting in a closed garage, you can immediately begin upholstering the gates with foil penofol. It is stapled to the slats with the foil facing out, or screwed with self-tapping screws.
In this form, the gate can already be used. To make the doors impact-resistant from the inside, and even warmer, you can line them with clapboard.
It is cut and impregnated with an antiseptic, then screwed with self-tapping screws or nailed.
Finally, it is necessary to cover the ends of the lining with a decorative corner. Gates insulated in this way will last a very long time. Their only weak point is the gaps between the doors and the frame, open to sunlight, sealed with foam, but foaming them again after 4-6 years is not a problem.
