How and when to plant garlic in winter for a big harvest
Garlic is planted in open ground 3-4 weeks before the onset of cold weather. Depending on the region, it is better to do this from the second half of September until the end of the first ten days of December. In addition to meeting deadlines, it is also important to adhere to other conditions.
Site selection and soil preparation
Garlic grows best in an open, sunny place. It is important not to fertilize the soil under it with manure. From such feeding it will have a loose head and large tops, in addition, plants in such an area can be affected by fungi. The optimal fertilizer is compost. On acidic soils, it is advisable to scatter ash, so the garlic will feel better. The area is dug up in advance, old weeds are removed by the roots.
To prevent diseases, the soil should be treated shortly before planting with a solution of copper sulfate prepared in a proportion of 40 g. for 10 liters of water. The area is watered from a watering can without skipping.
Landing Features
Only the largest and healthiest cloves are used for seeds.
Parsing the heads into slices is done right before planting.
For prevention, you can fill them with phytosporin solution for 5 minutes.
It is optimal to plant garlic in rows along the east-west direction. You need to drive 2 pegs along the edge of the planting area and pull the cord along them. This will be the control side. Holes for garlic are made with a peg every 15 cm. Their depth is 5-7 cm. It is very convenient to make a control ruler for this, simply by placing notches on a slate or board. The distance between the rows is 25 cm, which will allow you to conveniently process the plantation with a flat cutter.
A tablespoon of river sand is poured into each hole and a clove of garlic is inserted. Sand is poured on top again, which will create drainage. With it, the plant will not begin to rot. There is no need to press the teeth into the hole. When planted deep, garlic grows small.
Next, the ground is leveled with a rake. You can place cut raspberry stems on top. They will protect against frost, retain snow and prevent waterlogging of the soil.
