How to clean the DPF particulate filter to perfection at home
The particulate filter together with the catalyst of used cars becomes very dirty. As a result, fuel consumption increases, and the power and dynamics of the car decreases. Cleaning the filter solves the problem. In car repair shops they do this hastily, removing only part of the soot. Having a few hours of free time, it is better to clean the filter yourself.
What you will need:
- Particulate filter cleaner;
- plastic container;
- high pressure washer.
Filter cleaning process
The filter can only be properly cleaned by removing it from the car. We simply disconnect the sensors and unscrew it from the exhaust system. Then open the filter by loosening the tightening clamp or bolts if you have a different design.
In this case, the particulate filter and catalyst are located in the same housing.
The catalyst is placed in a plastic container and then filled with a specialized cleaner.
This is a caustic substance, so it is better not to inhale its fumes. The poured catalyst is left to dissolve in the cleaner for the time specified in the instructions for the composition used.
After the specified time has passed, you need to drain the cleaner.Many such compositions can be settled, and after sediment has formed, they can then be reused a couple more times. After the cleaner, the catalyst is washed with water.
It will start to foam, this is a normal reaction. The catalyst must be rinsed by dipping it in water to remove the soaked soft soot as much as possible.
To clean it further, you can use a pressure washer. It will fight off particles that simply cannot be washed away. As a result, clean, clear water will flow out of the catalyst.
The particulate filter cells will be more difficult to wash. To save cleaner consumption, you can plug the filter outlet and fill it with the compound. After the time specified in the instructions for the cleaner, the chemical is drained.
Marked soot can be washed out with water by directing the flow from a high-pressure washer into the tube. There will be a lot of soot this time. After chemistry, it will wash out quite well.
The cleaned filter is put back together and installed. If you don't have the patience to wash it perfectly, then that's okay. At high engine speeds, small soot residues will then burn off. The main thing is to give the engine a chance to warm up properly.
