8 fresh life hacks for the workshop and garage

With a little thought, you can come up with completely unusual solutions to everyday and work problems. We offer a selection of 8 life hacks that really work. Many of them will surely prove to be very useful for you both in the workshop and in the garage.

1. Homemade scraper for removing stickers

A sharp small scraper for glass can be made from the blade of a mounting knife. It is placed with the opposite side from the cutting edge in a plastic tube cut lengthwise.

The pipe with the blade is placed in a vice, heated and compressed. After this, the edges of the resulting handle are carefully trimmed.

That's it, the scraper is ready for use.

2. Lug for the cable. Quick release cable connection

To secure the cable, you can place a threaded boss on its edge. To do this, you will need a part from the bot, drilled lengthwise.

The tube obtained from the bolt is filled with lead, which is then melted in it.

The edge of the route is inserted into the liquid metal.

The lead will harden and the boss will hold securely. Now it can be screwed into extended nuts, for example, to connect two cables.

3. Soldering iron for bags

If you cut off a staple from a stationery binder and insert it into a pulse soldering iron, you will get a tool for soldering bags. We simply run a hot staple across the polyethylene and it sticks together. In this way, you can hermetically seal various bags, for example, with leftover chips, etc.

4. Removable table hook

You can organize additional storage space in your workshop using a hook. It bends easily from the wire. We attach a hook to a table leg or stand and hang anything on it.

5. Drawing arcs using improvised means

If you want to draw a neat arc on a piece of wood, drywall or other sheet material, just hammer a nail into its beginning. Then we rest the metal ruler against it and bend it. The resulting wave is outlined with a pencil or marker. The result is a smooth line with natural curves.

6. How to find the center of the head of a furniture bolt

If you need to determine the center of the head of a furniture bolt, for example, in order to drill it lengthwise, you need to clamp the hardware in a drill.

Then we sand the head with sandpaper, making a small plane.

It will be easy to determine the center from the sanding mark.

7. How to disconnect a plastic tie

A plastic tie can be easily unfastened by inserting a tape from another tie under the tongue of its lock.

After this, it can be loosened or removed and then reused.

8. Soft pads on the vice

To prevent the vice jaws from crushing soft workpieces, plastic covers can be made on them. To do this, you need to cut the PP pipe lengthwise.

The halves are alternately clamped in a vice and heated with a hairdryer.

The malleable plastic will easily mold to the shape of the sponges.

All that remains is to trim the linings along the edges to make them look neater. With them you can even clamp the thread without the risk of ruining it.

    1. If there are blades, then there’s probably a handle lying around somewhere, the price is a pittance
    2. It’s good to hang on such a quick-release connection, the lead is, firstly, soft, and secondly, there is no solder at all and it will hold only due to friction...
    5. Drawing arcs - well, try to draw something like this yourself, with the loose end of an elastic ruler, or you suddenly develop a third hand...
    6. A rather inaccurate way to find the center, especially if you want to drill, then such things are drilled with a stationary drill and a part clamped in the drill, and then the center itself will be found.
    8. Plastic is not the best thread protection. It will slip under load, checked. And if you just need to cut off part of a threaded rod, you can safely clamp it with ordinary jaws; the thread is quite hard and will not be damaged when cutting with a hacksaw or grinder. As a last resort, if you have slightly overdone the clamp, run a nut along the threads.
More often, sheet and soft materials are damaged by sponges, the sponges are hardened, I cut the linings from ordinary tin, everything works great and is held in place due to the bent side surfaces.
