Protecting seedlings from snails using electric current
An interesting and simple way to make electrical protection on a 9 V battery for your crop of seedlings (specifically tomatoes in our case) from snails, slugs and other unpleasant crawling things like worms and caterpillars.
Many gardeners and gardeners know very well how snails love to eat the leaves of tomato seedlings. I have boxes of it in my greenhouse (or outside).
And the snails are constantly trying to get to him, I just can’t save him. Somehow I came up with this way to protect against them.
Will need
- Self-adhesive copper tape - you can buy it at Ali Express (http://ali.pub/3fiq81).
- Battery type “Krona” 9 V.
- Battery connector.
- Pair of wire.
- A couple of small plastic bottles for the body.
We make protection against snails and creeping snails
You need to make two tracks from copper tape.
We tape around the perimeter of the seedling box. Two strips with a small distance from each other (5-10 mm).
Next, you need to make a waterproof box to protect the battery from precipitation. For this, the two lower parts of plastic bottles were used. Cut off the halves.
And we connect them into a box.
We make a hole in one of the covers with a hot soldering iron and bring the wires out from the block through it. Seal with hot glue.
We close the box.
We solder long wires to the terminals and insulate them with heat shrink or electrical tape.
We solder the long conductors to the strips on the box.
That's all. Protection activated.
The device in its original form consumes virtually no electric current. When rain passes, the element will be protected. And thanks to the sides of the seedling box, rainwater will not get on the electrodes.
How it works?
A snail is a slug that is completely covered with mucus, and it, in turn, like any liquid, passes electric current well.
Once the snail is ready to reach your plants, it will need to cross the area with the copper strips. And as soon as she crosses them, she will close the circuit with her body and an electric current will run through the cochlea.
This, of course, will not kill her, but it will scare her so much for a second that she will even try to hide in the sink.
An attempt to overcome such a barrier will be prevented. The harvest is saved!
Such protection can be made for each plant as a whole.
