Lugs for a walk-behind tractor made from old VAZ wheels
For normal operation of the walk-behind tractor on loose soil, lugs are required. When manufactured at the factory, they are inexpensive, but if you make them yourself, they will cost almost nothing at all. At the same time, lugs made by yourself are much stronger than purchased ones.
Ideally, use stamped wheels from any old VAZ car. Their mounting holes usually coincide with the holes on the cutter shaft plate of most Chinese walk-behind tractors. Thanks to this, it will be possible to use the axle shaft from the cutter as a hub, securing the lugs to the gearbox.
The rims are cut from the discs using a grinder.
The result is fairly narrow lightweight wheels. If they are not trimmed, the lugs will be too high, so walk-behind tractors that are not wide enough will lose stability, since the center of gravity will shift significantly upward.
To make hooks on the cut discs, you need to cut a corner.
Its segments are securely welded onto the first wheel, not evenly, but with a slight distortion of 1 cm.
The gap between the corners should be 3 cm. The presence of a bevel on the hooks will allow them to self-clean if the soil is wet.
On the second wheel, when welding the corner, you should also move 1 cm, but at the opposite angle. If this is not done, then when moving the walk-behind tractor will move to one side and it will be difficult to keep it level.
To directly install the lugs on the walk-behind tractor, you will need to disassemble the first section of the standard factory cutter included with the walk-behind tractor. The knives are removed from it, and the shaft is screwed to the wheels through the mounting plate. For this purpose, bolts are used that were used to fasten knives. As a result, the wheels receive hubs and can be installed on the walk-behind tractor gearbox.
If the holes on the axle shaft of the cutter and the wheels do not match, then the disks will have to be slightly modified. To do this, you need to weld thick steel plastic into them and drill it under the hub of the cutter.
In the future, if you need cutters, you will need to remove the axle shafts from the wheels. Such lugs will perform well on sandy and soft soils. On good black soil they work only in dry weather. If moisture appears, then the spikes, despite the bevel, still become clogged with swamp.
