We return transparency to a yellowed silicone phone case
Transparent silicone cases begin to turn yellow after just a couple of months of use, especially if they are exposed to sunlight a lot. As a result, they have to be replaced, even though they have no scuffs or tears. To restore transparency, the case can be soaked in homemade bleach, which completely removes the yellowness without leaving a trace of it. Most of the components for its preparation are already available in the house, and if you have to buy them, it is still cheaper than constantly replacing yellow covers.
Materials:
- vinegar;
- paint thinner;
- washing powder;
- water;
- clean rags.
Silicone case restoration process
A layer of fabric is placed at the bottom of the container, then a couple of spoons of washing powder are poured in and about a cup of water is poured in.
It is advisable to use warm water so that the powder dissolves faster. A clean cloth or napkins are dipped into the bath on top. Their presence will improve the removal of yellowness. It will stick to the fabric and not settle back. The fabric will also prevent the cover from floating up.Then add a tablespoon of any vinegar to the bleach.
The cover is immersed in the bath and wrapped in fabric previously soaked in it. After 5 minutes, add about a teaspoon of solvent for epoxy primers. After another 5 minutes, everything is mixed and left for half an hour. When stirring, it is also worth rubbing the dirtiest and yellowed areas with a cloth. The solution can be touched without gloves. The concentration of vinegar and solvent in it is not sufficient to harm healthy skin. If you have increased skin sensitivity or allergies to detergents, then it is better to wear gloves.
After 40 minutes from the start of soaking, the cover is removed. This time is enough for it to become completely transparent again. All that remains is to rinse it in clean water to remove the powder and dry it. This is a cheap, very effective method that is easy to use at home. You can clean the same case from yellowness as many times as you like until it breaks or wears out from use. The most expensive component for homemade bleach is the solvent. Many car enamel stores can sell it in bottles of 100 ml or more, so if you ask around, you won’t have to buy a full bottle.
