High-quality planting material for obtaining a bountiful harvest of winter garlic
It has long been known that the yield of winter garlic directly depends on the quality of planting material. Therefore, the choice of seeds for winter sowing of onion crops is of great importance. Arrowing garlic is propagated by cloves, single cloves and aerial bulbs. One-toothed plants are obtained from bulbs sown in the fall. Non-shooting types of winter garlic are grown only from cloves extracted from bulbs.
1. When deciding on a variety, give preference to zoned types of garlic or plants grown in your area. It is these varieties, most adapted to the climate and characteristics of your region, that produce abundant harvests.
2. If possible, grow varieties of winter garlic that have purple or white-purple outer scales. According to reviews from experienced vegetable growers, this garlic has high levels of winter hardiness and resistance to dangerous diseases of onion vegetables.
3. Select for planting only large single-claws and commercial heads of the same size.
4.For sowing, use exclusively healthy bulbs with an intact integumentary membrane, and without signs of damage by phytopathogens (mould, brown dents) or mechanical damage.
5. Choose heads with characteristic varietal characteristics (husk color, number of cloves).
6. Use varietal bulbs in which all fractions are approximately the same size.
7. Do not separate the heads into individual cloves in advance. Parse the bulbs into fractions no earlier than 12-14 hours before the sowing campaign.
8. Do not buy small garlic at the market for planting. Plants grown from such material tend to produce even smaller bulbs of the pungent vegetable. This is due to the persistent ability of garlic to degenerate, so even the best and favorite varieties of garlic need to be renewed every 4-5 years by growing single cloves from aerial bulbs or purchasing single cloves of your favorite varieties from nurseries.
9. Be sure to disinfect the garlic cloves before planting if for some reason you are using material that is in doubt. Cloves extracted from problem bulbs are subject to pickling. Use either special preparations, such as Maxim, or microbiological agents based on Trichoderma mycelium and strains of Bacillus subtilis, or a pink solution of potassium permanganate.
Healthy cloves and large cloves, sown before winter, produce powerful plants with the arrival of spring.
And strong garlic seedlings with well-developed leaf apparatus form strong and juicy marketable bulbs. Have a good harvest of vegetables in your garden plot!
