How to secure a handle without a wedge and other secrets of a hammer
Everyone uses hammers, but with the advent of many affordable power tools and inexpensive screws, they don’t do it as often as before. Therefore, it is not surprising that many functions of hammers ceased to be used and were forgotten. Let's look at a few tricks of this tool that may still come in handy.
1. Pulling out nails without heads
The carpenter's hammer has a nail puller on the back side of the striker, which can be used to pull out driven nails by picking them up by the head. If it breaks and only the rod remains, then it is impossible to grab it. In this case, the nail is inserted into the cut of the nail puller, and the hammer is turned to the side at the break.
The resulting bend will allow you to pick up the rod and pull it out of the tree.
2. Pulling out long nails
If you have to pull out a long nail, the claw hammer lever will not pull it out. In this case, it is usually necessary to place a block under the tool. When it is not there, then half of the nail can be bent with a nail puller to the break, and then, when pulled out, cling to the bend.
3. Bend the nail point
This function of a carpenter's hammer is also useful for bending the tip of a nail on the back side of nailed boards. After this, the bent bracket is driven into the wood, which increases the strength of the connection and prevents injury.
You can do the same thing with a plumber's hammer. But to do this you need to drill a hole in it with a 3 mm drill.
It is enough to insert the tip of the nail into it and turn the tool 90 degrees. It is even more convenient to bend the bracket in this way.
4. Reliable fastening of the handle without a wedge
To secure the handle in the hammer head, you need to drill it from the end with a 6 mm drill to a depth of 70 mm.
Then you need to make a side hole so as to connect it with the previous one. It is drilled with a 10 mm drill 50 mm from the edge of the handle.
Next, the handle is pressed onto the hammer.
A furniture barrel is inserted into its side hole, and a hex bolt with a wide washer is screwed into it.
After tightening, the handle will sit in the hammer head very securely, and it will not fly off when swinging.
5. Calculation of the length of the hammer handle
In order for the hammer to be comfortable to use, the length of its handle must be adjusted to the master. You need to grasp the handle with both hands with a thumbs up grip. The excess part that remains uncovered is cut off.
