How to drill a bolt straight along without a lathe or drilling machine

Quite often, when making metalwork structures, it is necessary to drill a bolt or stud lengthwise. This is done either using a drilling or lathe.

But if this equipment is not available to you, you can drill a bolt in normal garage conditions. Of course, experienced locksmiths are proficient in such techniques, but beginners are sometimes lost.

Will need

• Screwdriver or drill.
• Bench vice.
• Drill of the required diameter.

How to simply drill a bolt lengthwise

We take the required bolt for drilling and clamp it in the drill chuck. If you are afraid of “ruining” the thread, then wrap it in several turns of masking tape before clamping.

Secure the drill in a vice with the shank to the jaws.

We start the drill and start drilling. Due to the fact that the drill stands still and the bolt rotates, auto-centering occurs and drilling proceeds strictly in the center without deviations.

Next, if necessary, the bolt can be threaded.

And secure something.
