How to prepare a fireproof mortar and plaster a stove with it

The range of temperature changes in a wood-burning stove is noticeably wider than in electric or gas stoves. Therefore, defects in the form of cracks, cracks and gaps often appear in them. To eliminate them, you need a special solution that any adult can prepare from readily available and inexpensive materials.

Will need

Materials:

  • 6 kg of sifted ash;
  • 1 kg table salt;
  • 1 kg slaked lime;
  • liquid glass (silicate glue).

Tools: a container for mixing ash and salt, a container for diluting slaked lime, a trowel, spatulas, a paint brush.

The process of preparing and plastering a wood stove with fireproof alkaline mortar

In a clean container of suitable volume, pour 6 kg of sifted ash and 1 kg of table salt, which is needed to increase the strength of the heat-resistant solution.

Mix these two ingredients thoroughly with a construction trowel until we get a homogeneous mixture, which may take about 5 minutes.

Separately mix 1 kg of slaked lime in water until a homogeneous mass is obtained, the so-called. milk of lime, which we then gradually pour into a container with ash and salt.

If you pour in all the milk of lime at once, the salt will begin to dissolve rapidly and the solution will turn out to be too liquid. Then to increase its density we will add ash.

Before plastering, all areas planned for treatment are cleaned of dust and thoroughly moistened with water using a paint brush, otherwise the solution will not lie firmly and will collapse after the first firing of the furnace.

By the way, to increase the viscosity and plasticity of the solution, add 50 grams of silicate glue, which is also called liquid glass.

Using the resulting heat-resistant alkaline solution, we seal the gaps between the stove, firebox door, ash pan, metal edging and brickwork, as well as cracks in the plaster of chimney wells, etc.

Having finished the preliminary plastering, we melt and warm up the oven well so that the plastered areas dry out and weak spots in the plaster appear, usually in the form of microcracks, which are removed by repeated plastering.

The peculiarity of this fireproof alkaline mortar is that when heated, it first becomes plastic, like wall putty, and can be adjusted where necessary.

Temperature cracks in the plaster of chimney ducts are first primed with an aqueous solution of silicate glue using a paint brush. We wait for it to dry and plaster it with the same fireproof alkaline solution as the oven.
