How to distinguish an original platinum or iridium spark plug from a fake without leaving the store

The purpose of spark plugs on gasoline and gas engines is to initiate combustion of the fuel in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The operation of the entire engine very much depends on the quality of operation of this small unit.

Today, thousands of companies around the world produce spark plugs. Platinum and iridium products are becoming increasingly common, which include the widespread iridium spark plugs produced by the Japanese company NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd.

As you know, dishonest manufacturers try to counterfeit popular products. NGK spark plugs did not escape this fate either. Therefore, counterfeits can be bought both in real stores and virtual ones.

How to easily check spark plugs using a magnet

Experts recommend carrying a small magnet with you, which will make it easy to distinguish a fake from the original. As a result, significant money will be saved, and most importantly, the operation of the entire engine operating on gasoline or gas fuel will not be affected.

The fact is that the side electrode of counterfeit spark plugs, to reduce costs, is made from ordinary unalloyed steel, which for the most part is subject to magnetization. If you bring a small magnet to its side electrode, it will be attracted to the magnet and the candle can even be moved from one place to another.

In original spark plugs, the side electrodes are made of platinum and iridium alloys, which do not have magnetization properties, to ensure the required spark characteristics and significantly increase the service life of the products. Therefore, they do not interact with the magnet in any way and are not attracted to it.

As for the central electrode, in original spark plugs it is also not magnetized, since it is made of iridium or platinum alloy. In fake spark plugs, it can often be made of a non-magnetizable material, since it does not require too much expensive alloy steel due to the small diameter of the main electrode. But this does not change the overall picture: after all, the side electrode is made of ordinary steel.

To check whether the central electrode is magnetizable or non-magnetizable due to the proximity of the massive side electrode, we use a small piece of magnetizable wire connected to a large magnet. This could be a straightened paper clip, a long needle, etc.
