How to make a perpetual trimmer reel
A handheld grass trimmer is a great thing! Reliable engine, good ergonomics, comfortable to work with. Almost all summer residents and gardeners have them. The perfect tool. If not for one weak link... The mowing head.
A plastic part that is subjected to heavy loads during operation. And as a result, it is short-lived. The body itself wears out, the plastic locking nut wears off, plastic parts break and become deformed. And threading a reel with fishing line is no fun either. What if we try to improve this unit? And besides, make it extremely simple. Let's try.
Do-it-yourself eternal trimmer reel
The first thing you need to do is unscrew the head from the lower gearbox. To do this you will need a screwdriver to lock the shaft. When unscrewing the mowing head, remember that it has a left-hand thread. Unscrewed it. You can see how much grass is wound up. It needs to be removed, and the lower gearbox shaft can be sprayed with liquid lubricant, since it has been disassembled anyway. But we will not put the old head back. There is a better method.
From the old head we will take only part of it - the body where the spool with fishing line is installed. Moreover, we will not install any spool. We use only the body. It may even be partially damaged. This will not interfere with the revision. The body already has two holes where the mowing line was inserted. Let's drill two more. The holes are evenly distributed around the circumference of the coil, i.e. the angle between them is 90 degrees.
Next, the coil body is screwed onto the gearbox shaft.
Plastic flexible ties of a suitable size are inserted into the holes made. The length of the ties should be as long as possible, but so that they do not hit the protective casing.
That's it, you can carry out tests.
Works. It mows very well. And replacing a worn-out screed is a very simple matter.
