Remaking a trimmer to control weeds
Weed control in the garden takes up the lion's share of gardeners' time. The job is tedious and difficult. But necessary. What if we mechanize it?
The implementation of the idea will require not only the availability of special metalworking and welding equipment, but also the ability to use it. Let's take a grass trimmer as the basis for the new device. Our task is to make a device instead of a standard trimmer head that will cut weeds and at the same time loosen the soil. A kind of cutter-cultivator. Begin.
How to convert a brushcutter to control weeds
We remove the reel with fishing line and standard protection. They won't be needed. But protection during further use of the cultivator is still necessary. We will make a new protective casing. For this we took an old wheel cover from a Moskvich car.
We carefully mark the holes for its fastening, drill it, file it, and try it on. Great!
The cultivator blades that will cut weeds should go deep into the soil. This means that you cannot put them on the lower gearbox of the scythe right away. It is necessary to make some kind of spacer. We use a rectangular steel profile for it.And during its manufacture, special care and attention is required - if the hole for the gearbox axis is not in the center, and the knives are attached asymmetrically, then our head of the cultivator cutter will hit.
As a cutting tool, we will take an old blade from an industrial ripping saw. We fix the canvas to the spacer by welding. The knives of the new head should not extend beyond the protective casing. We'll cut off the excess.
The crucial moment is assembly. We attach our new protection to the trimmer, and install the head we made on the gearbox axis. In our case, the length of the cutting part of the cutter was 22 cm. We used a car cap of this size as a protective casing. The cultivator cutter will be buried 2 cm into the soil.
And now the tests! Works great! To reduce the weight of the new cutting head, you can modify it slightly by cutting off some of the metal from the spacer.
