How to sharpen meat grinder knives to razor sharp condition
If the knives of a manual meat grinder become dull, then obtaining minced meat turns into hard and lengthy physical labor, because instead of cutting the meat, the tool crushes and crushes it. At the same time, it is necessary to constantly and quite often clean the knives of veins and films.
In this case, it is not necessary to contact a specialist and pay for his work; knives can be sharpened with your own hands without much difficulty and this does not require special knowledge or professional experience.
Do-it-yourself sharpening of meat grinder knives
From a sheet of P80-grit sandpaper, cut out a circle slightly larger than the diameter of the grate, which we place on the back of the sandpaper. We insert a wooden rod into one of the holes and cut off 2 fragments in height equal to the thickness of the mesh.
We apply superglue to one end of the fragments, insert them into 2 oppositely located grid holes at the maximum distance so that they stick to the sandpaper using a hardener.
Keeping the sandpaper pressed against the grate, cut off the strip that extends beyond its edges. We mark with a marker on sandpaper a hole in the center of the grate and a notch on the edge, and draw them on paper.
We put the knife, grid with sandpaper and stoppers in place, tighten the clamping nut and rotate the meat grinder handle.
To ensure “wet” sharpening of the knife, pour a little water into the meat receiver without ceasing to rotate the handle.
We unscrew the clamping nut, sequentially remove the grille, a circle of sandpaper with stoppers and a knife. We make sure that it is sharpened from the front side. We correct the upper edges of the cutting edge with a file.
We sharpen the grate on sandpaper, making rotational movements. To ensure “wet” sharpening, pour a little water into the hole in the center of the grate without stopping the sharpening process.
We reassemble the cutting elements of the meat grinder and tighten the clamping nut. We check the degree of sharpening of the knives in practice and make sure they are in excellent condition.
