How to easily sharpen meat grinder knives
This method of sharpening meat grinder knives is available to everyone. It will not require specialized tools or devices from you; because of this, it will take a minimum of preparation and you can start sharpening almost immediately. This is the simplest and most common technology that is suitable for both electric and manual meat grinders.
What will you need?
- A whetstone for sharpening regular kitchen knives or a wooden block with a piece of sandpaper.
- Some tap water.
Do-it-yourself sharpening of meat grinder knives
We start by disassembling the meat grinder. Unscrew the ring and take out the knives.
On knives that have been in use for a long time, risks, nicks, and chips are clearly visible.
A round knife is called a mesh knife. The edges of the holes suffer: they chip, become dull and become rounded. Also, with very long use, knives can acquire a wavy surface instead of a straight blade.
So, we take a sharpening stone, it should be flat. You can also use a grinding wheel.
We soak the sponge in water and wet the surface of the whetstone for sharpening knives.
We place the knife from the meat grinder with its blades on the block and, using a back-and-forth movement, with slight pressure, we begin sharpening. The duration of sharpening depends on the degree of wear. If you do this regularly, then one knife takes about 2-3 minutes of continuous work.
If you don’t have a sharpening stone, you can make it yourself. You need to take a piece of straight board or a straight block of wood and a piece of sandpaper. The finer the grain of the paper, the better.
We tuck the paper under the block. For better fastening, you can fix it with a furniture stapler, but this is not necessary - when pressed, the paper holds itself perfectly and does not slide off.
We wet the surface of the knife with water and also sharpen the meat grinder knives with reciprocating movements.
By the shine and the disappearance of marks in the form of circles, you can determine the evenness of the surface and the level of sharpening.
After sharpening, all surfaces shine like new. All risks have been removed.
After this, you can rinse the knives under running water to remove small particles of metal and wipe dry. Assemble the meat grinder.
Of course, with the use of special grinding machines and sharpening tools, the quality of knife sharpening will be higher, I will not argue with that. I just showed you how to do it simply without unnecessary hassles in your kitchen.
