Various ways to level brick walls
As a rule, during a major renovation the question arises about leveling the walls. Unfortunately, there is not always a flat surface ready for further work. And sometimes the owner of the premises simply decides to make a new renovation from scratch. It is proposed to consider the process of leveling brick walls.
Required Tools
To carry out repair work you will need:
• Plumb. This tool allows you to accurately determine the vertical plane.
• Master OK. This item is used for applying and evenly distributing building mixtures.
• Lighthouses serve as landmarks.
• Reinforcing mesh prevents the applied material from falling off.
• Self-tapping screws are needed to attach the mesh to the wall surface.
• Construction materials for work.
• A hammer drill is required for dismantling.
• Vertical guides. With their help, even application of building mixtures is carried out.
• Sandpaper to remove roughness.
• A metal frame is necessary for working with drywall.
Ways to level a wall
To make the surface of a brick wall smooth, you can use two technologies:
1. Dry method using drywall.
2. Raw - with construction mixture.
The choice of work technology depends on the quality of the surface. If, after measuring the level, it is clear that the difference in the wall surface reaches 0.5 cm, you can use putty. In case of fluctuations reaching 3-5 cm, more complex work is already required. When the difference is more than 5 cm, you cannot do without drywall.
Application of plaster
To carry out plastering work, you first need to prepare the surface - this is very important.
When working with a brick surface, it is best to use a cement mixture. This material is inexpensive and can be applied in a thick layer. However, you should remember: if the layer is more than 2 cm, you cannot do without a reinforcing mesh.
The next stage is the installation of beacons. You can use a perforated profile as beacons or buy ready-made ones. This is much more convenient - after applying the mixture there is no need to remove the beacons and seal the recesses.
Once the beacons are installed, you can proceed to the next stage of the work - plastering.
Using a trowel, spread a large amount of the mixture onto the work surface. Next, a rule is taken and the plaster is evenly distributed. All walls in the room are treated this way. As soon as the 1st layer has dried, you can apply the next one. However, the thickness should be less than 2 cm. Also, do not forget to check the wall with a level.
Application of putty
This option is suitable when the surface difference is small. To carry out the work you will need 2 spatulas: narrow and wide. The building mixture is applied with a narrow spatula, while leveling occurs with a wide one.
After the 1st layer has dried, you need to go over it with sandpaper and remove all the irregularities. If a 2nd coat is required, it is better to apply a primer first. As soon as the 2nd layer dries, you need to go over the wall again with sandpaper.
Application of drywall
It happens that a brick wall has strong discrepancies - more than 5 cm. Here you cannot do without drywall. From a financial point of view, this option is even more economical than the previous ones. Alignment can be done either with or without a frame.
In the first case, a frame is first created for attaching drywall sheets. It can be made of iron or wood. It is worth noting that a wooden frame is less durable and more difficult to install.
How the frame is created: guides are attached with self-tapping screws; they should run parallel to each other every 40-60 cm.
When using the frameless method, drywall is attached directly to the wall. However, in this case it will not be possible to eliminate the existing defects.
You can also use plastic panels or plywood for work, which are attached to wooden blocks. This is a budget option, which is often used for repairing country houses and garages. Using these materials you can hide communications.
