A simple but effective fight against computer noise

I always thought that the noise in a computer was created solely by the fans running inside to circulate air. Oh how wrong I was! After all, the bulk of the noise is created by the computer case itself. All vibration from all working parts of the computer such as the hard drive, fans or cooler is transmitted to the case.

And what’s most interesting is that the vibration from the case is transmitted quite well to surrounding objects, in particular to the stand on which the computer stands.

I will offer you one simple action to understand - that five minutes is enough to make your PC a little quieter!

To do this, you need to place vibration-absorbing material between the PC and what it stands on. The material may be different, but the softer and thicker it is, the better. At the top of these materials there will be a piece of foam rubber.

Here's my PC. It's quite noisy.

After a soft fabric backing, the difference is quite noticeable! In particular, low-frequency noise disappeared.

I must say that empty cardboard boxes also help. But too strong can have the opposite effect, too weak can bend under the weight of the computer. Foam rubber, by the way, can be quite toxic, especially when it deteriorates over time.

Over 25 years of working with computers, I have accumulated extensive experience in noise reduction. Be sure to use a gasket under the body! This will eliminate resonance and the transfer of hum to the tabletop, which itself will be a source of hum. It is best to cut the gasket from thick foamed linoleum on a felt base. The computer will stand on its legs, just like on a table, and air from below will flow freely. Cover the walls, roof of the case and the sides of the Hdd basket with vibration-damping material for cars - based on bitumen and foil. Don’t listen to nonsense about the deterioration of heat dissipation! Your heat is removed with hot air by fans, the walls don’t play even half a percent. All fans must be secured with rubber bolts, they can be found in the computer. stores If not or you are sorry for the money, cut out gaskets from porous material both for the corners of the fan housing and for the screw heads. Don't over-tighten.It is best to make these gaskets from polyethylene foam sheets. It can be found as packaging for a monitor or video card, etc. Apply regular electrical tape around the perimeter of the side covers of the case to prevent metal from clinking against the metal of the case. And lastly, when buying even an expensive computer case, try to choose one where the block for installing hard drives is attached only to the top part, but does not reach the bottom.
