A quick way to sharpen a hand saw with a grinder

A very quick way to sharpen an old or new hand saw with a tool such as an angle grinder. It will only take you 5-10 minutes for all the teeth of your hacksaw to reach their original sharpness. This sharpening technique is designed exclusively for experienced users, those who have been working with an angle grinder for several days.

Sharpening a saw with a grinder

The first thing you need to do is clamp the saw well. It is better to use two clamps at the edges. During any manipulation, the canvas should not “play”, much less move to the side.
It is advisable to clamp the blade horizontally, parallel to the plane of the workbench.

The saw is old, this is what the unsharpened teeth originally looked like. They cut just as badly.

We install a circle on the grinder with as fine a grain as possible. We start the tool and sharpen each tooth one by one at an angle on one side. First, we sharpen one side of the tooth, then we go in the opposite direction and sharpen the other side of the tooth.

Turn the blade over and sharpen the other side of the saw.

We check it in real conditions - we cut down a tree.

It cuts perfectly.

The cut is smooth, the structure of the cut does not deteriorate - everything is smooth.

If the saw jams when cutting, you should check the tooth alignment. The thickness of the wiring must be at least twice the thickness of the hacksaw blade.
In total, it took about 5 minutes to sharpen the saw. With no more than 10 preparations.
Do not forget about safety precautions when working with hand-held power tools. The grinder is a particularly dangerous tool with which you need to be especially careful.
If you do not have sufficient experience working with angle grinders, then I recommend that you abandon this technique.

    For the "grinder" there are saw blades for wood or MDF. It is possible to convert an angle grinder into a wood saw, but it’s not worth it - you might end up with no hands. And it’s not worth sharpening a hacksaw with an angle grinder; there are too many nuances in such work.I say this as a carpenter, because if you lower a tooth a little on one side, the saw will go to the side (as well as with an uneven setting), and it’s simply not possible to sharpen a small or medium tooth - the disc is too thick for such work. But on a large tooth it’s better to spend half an hour or an hour with a file, but then you won’t have to cross the tooth on the blade. Although if it’s easier for you after such, so to speak, “sharpening,” instead of re-sharpening, to throw away the tool, then fair wind.

Triangular file, a little more time and the same result.
Minuses:
- your hands will get tired
- without the skill and understanding of how to start a file, you can ruin a hacksaw
Pros:
- no need for an angle grinder or electricity
- can be sharpened many times without reducing tooth height

Grinder is rude. It’s more convenient, more accurate, better quality and faster than using a Dremel with a 20-30mm disc - nothing, a file and an angle grinder weren’t lying nearby.

  I also sharpened with a file for forty years, now I’ve switched to millimeter discs, but I put them on emery and sharpen only large teeth for rough cutting, and fine ones only with a file, although it’s expensive.

We need experience, but we still get different angles. About 25 years ago I solved this problem like this: I installed a narrow diamond disk on a manual circular saw Rib (approx. 1 mm. I’ll have to look for it. At first I used a bakelite cutting blade, but it was without reinforcement... the infection spread!) We fasten the circular saw to the table with clamps (included in the kit), set the sharpening angle on the table and sharpen for your own pleasure. It is advisable to reduce the speed (to set fire to the hacksaw teeth) using a regulator with soft start (assembled separately) based on the Kr1182pm1 microcircuit. I assure you, this is faster and better quality than sharpening an angle grinder
