Repairing a broken connector tongue

The plastic connector for connecting the Internet cable is a very fragile thing. Especially often, when the cable is regularly connected to various devices, the locking tab of the connector breaks. Such a breakdown leads to the fact that the detachable connection is not fixed, so the connector jumps out of the socket at the slightest movement of the cable. Today I will tell you how you can quickly fix the situation using two ordinary cable ties.

Important! This method should be considered as a temporary solution and is only suitable for home use.

Necessary tool

In addition to two small cable ties, you will need the following tool:
  • Sharp knife.
  • Wire cutters.
  • Pliers or a special gun for tightening cable ties.

The size of the ties is of great importance: the width of the head must exactly match the width of the top of the socket. By experience, I selected the head size - it is 4.3 mm. This tie fits into the socket with the usual click, and when you try to pull it out by the tie, you feel good resistance.

  4. To secure the tab, a second tie is used, which is tightened around the cable with pliers or a gun.

We survived... the three-ruble connector, instead of just replacing it, we will now repair it...
Even with a flat screwdriver, crimping a new one will be faster than preparing two zip ties...

It's not the connector. Few people know how to crimp a twisted pair cable correctly, even if they have three rubles.Sometimes you wait for hours for a system technician, but sometimes it only takes 5 minutes, and it’s easier to find clamps.

You take the old connector, insert the wires into the new one in the same color sequence, and press them in with a screwdriver. Not for morons, let them wait for the system specialist.

Honestly, if such a problem often arises, then googling the correct twisted-pair crimping method is not at all difficult, just like purchasing a crimper. Well, if there are problems with all of the above, then it’s better not to touch it at all :))

There is no single correct crimping sequence. There are two options. And it holds up quite well without this tongue, no need to “wait” - work for now.

Well, I don’t have the eyes to stuff the wires into the new connector in the same sequence and clamp them with a screwdriver or a knife if there is no crimper.

And there you don’t need to know anything. just insert the prepared ends of the wires and clamp them one at a time with a thin screwdriver. Do it once and learn. And this crimper works very quickly (the Chinese save on good steel). And after that it begins to damage the connectors. Therefore, if you don’t need to crimp dozens of them, it’s easier to do everything manually in five minutes, with a simple sharpened screwdriver.

Why wait for a system specialist? The cable is working, it just pops out if the connection is too movable. I have had such a cable in my router for several years and everything works great, but everything there is motionless. If the connection is movable, then you just need to immobilize it or slightly improve the fixation by placing a piece of paper, if it is not possible to immobilize it.
The connector still needs to be changed or switched to Wi-Fi.

The solution was very, very helpful, I just repaired the connector, especially since there are a lot of ties. Thanks for the idea.

It's easier to re-crimp. And it’s even easier to just use it without a tongue in the connector.

Yo! For now, with this option, the only question is to quickly re-compress! I have my own crimp and a supply of connectors “just in case” :-)

besides, two couplers are more expensive than one RJ-45

My method is the easiest. In half a minute I sharpened a match and stuck it on top of this connector. It's been working for five years now. The above methods in the comments, as in the article, are several times more labor-intensive.

You are ahead of me :) True, I use a toothpick, but in general it’s the same match. In my entire life I have used this method only a few times, when I encountered a given breakdown on a day off and was without a tool.
