How to cut a nail with a wood saw without damaging the teeth. Useful life hack
Sometimes there is an urgent need to saw a nail, but there is no hacksaw, no grinder with a cutting disc, no chisel with a hammer, or other tools that could be used to do this job relatively easily and simply.
It turns out that for this you can use, at first glance, the most inappropriate tool, in particular, a wood saw. This seems incredible: would it really be necessary to cut a nail with the teeth of a saw, but what would it be good for then?
Of course not. After all, usually the gaps between the saw teeth exceed the cross-section of the nail, in which it will constantly get stuck. In addition, such a combination of tool and processed material is unnatural to the principles of technical rationalism, and even common sense.
And yet, this is quite possible, and the saw teeth will not receive any damage. But how to do this without damaging the saw teeth?
In order to prepare a wood saw for cutting a nail, we will need one more item in the form of a hammer, a piece of reinforcement, a strip of metal, etc. We will use a regular file.
We will strike with the narrow edge of the file along the entire edge of the saw opposite the teeth.
As a result, shallow notches will remain on it, which will act as teeth for cutting metal.
Now let's check. If we suddenly come across a nail, we energetically begin the process of sawing the nail with the back of the hacksaw blade with the applied notches.
After some time, the nail will be successfully sawed.
Of course, such a palliative will not replace a metal saw, but it can be a good solution to help out in a hopeless situation and save time.
The wood saw blade material is tool or special steel, which has high physical, mechanical and performance characteristics.
The saw blade must have a hardness of at least the permissible value of 45, but most often it is 58 HRC. Such a product has the necessary flexibility at the same time as great mechanical strength.
The most common nails are made of low-carbon steel, which in their physical, mechanical and operational characteristics are close to pure iron. They have fairly high ductility, so they can be easily bent, but they are not too hard and durable.
Comparing the properties of the metals of these two products, we are convinced that the hacksaw is superior in all respects to the material of nails and the first can cut the second.
