I don’t buy trimmer line anymore, I make it myself from a PET bottle
A trimmer line can be made from a regular PET bottle at home. Having the skills to cut PET tape, this will not be difficult at all. In terms of durability, homemade fishing line is inferior to purchased fishing line, but it is free. Sometimes it’s easier to do it than to go to the store if it’s far away. If you need to mow only lawn grass, the durability of a homemade fishing line will be more than enough, and the need for a purchased one will disappear completely.
To make fishing line, you need to use bottles with thick walls. They make it quite tough and durable. If you use thin bottles, the fishing line will begin to fray from impacts on thick stems. You can use 5L bottles, beer kegs work especially well.
When using a regular bottle, it needs to be cut into a 15 mm wide strip.
A tape 8-9 mm wide is cut from beer kegs, since their walls are thicker and with a width of 15 mm the line will be excessively thick. The recommended tape width will ultimately allow you to obtain a fishing line with a cross-section of 2.5-3.5 mm.
The edge of the cut tape should be heated with a hair dryer and twisted.
The twisted end is then carefully trimmed and clamped into the screwdriver chuck.
Next, you need to slowly warm up the remaining part of the tape and tighten it with a screwdriver. It is important to keep the tape taut so that the line is straight and not twisted into rings.
In this case, the screwdriver must be started with short presses, since it must be rotated very slowly. It is important not to let go of the curled tape until it hardens so that it does not unwind. When you need to grab the line closer, a pause is made and after the plastic has cooled, the hand moves. With this sequence of actions, obtaining a marriage is excluded.
If you twist a ribbon from an ordinary bottle, you will get a fishing line a little more than 2 m long. When using a beer keg, you can get more than 30 m.
Homemade fishing line, especially from a keg, cuts even tall burdocks perfectly, although it breaks at the edges. When caring for a lawn, its resource is many times greater. Thus, making fishing line from PET bottles definitely makes sense.
If a specialized store that sells gardening tools is located far away, then it is easier to make a fishing line with your own hands and mow the area without wasting time on travel.
