How to make a high-quality housing for installing a bearing without a lathe
If, when assembling a machine tool or other mechanism, it becomes necessary to make a housing for pressing a bearing onto a plate, this can be done in a regular garage without using a lathe. Moreover, the finished part will look like a factory one.
Materials:
- steel plate;
- Sheet steel;
- a pipe with an internal diameter equal to the outer race of the bearing or thicker;
- bearing.
Case manufacturing process
The first step is to cut out the plate on which the housing will be located for pressing the bearing. Its thickness is selected based on the load. A hole is cut in the center of the plate 10-12 mm larger in diameter than the prepared pipe for pressing in the bearing.
Next, it should be sanded if it was cut out by hand and not drilled with a metal crown. Mounting holes must be drilled in the corners of the plate according to the drawing of the part being manufactured.
A disk equal to the diameter of the hole in the plate is cut out of thinner sheet steel.
It is drilled in the center for the shaft that will be installed in the bearing.The disk must be inserted into the plate and welded, aligning it flush to one side. Welding is performed with a continuous seam, then it is ground.
A ring is cut out from a pipe prepared for the bearing according to the width of its cage. If the pipe has a larger diameter than needed, the ring is cut across and narrowed. Next, it must be inserted into the plugged hole in the plate, aligned in the center, welded and sanded.
To strengthen the body, you need to cut out another similar ring and spread it lengthwise. A chamfer is removed along the inner corner. The ring is pulled over the already welded one. Then they are welded together from the end, which is facilitated by the chamfer. The resulting seam is sanded. Welding is also performed at the junction with the plate.
The actual end of the housing is created by a weld, so it must be precisely ground to ensure a tight bearing fit. This is the final point. Next, the bearing is pressed in, and the part is installed in the mechanism or machine for which it is intended.
The proposed method is suitable in cases where a large load will be placed on the part. Welding seams made in this way together very well strengthen the components, bringing them almost to solidity. For nodes without load, such manufacturing techniques are unnecessary. In such cases, it is enough to simply weld a piece of pipe onto the plate, and the part is ready.
