How to make a wood turning tool from an old rasp

A quality large roughing cutter for wood turning can easily cost $50 or more. Having no desire to buy this tool for that kind of money, you can make it yourself.

Materials:

• large rasp or file;
  
• wooden blank for handle;
  
• thin metal tube.

Cutter manufacturing process

For alteration, a large rasp or file made of high-quality steel is selected. It needs to be shortened if it is too long.

Next, a longitudinal concavity is formed on it. The workpiece is clamped in a vice and turned with a grinder.



The final groove of the selected groove is done by an engraver.


Next, the working blade is formed. Its corners need to be rounded. Sharpening is done using sandpaper on the opposite side of the concavity.





To harden the tool, you need to heat the blade with a torch until it turns cherry-red and cool it sharply in water.

Then a wooden handle with a ferrule is pressed onto the shank.
