10 Working Carpentry Tricks and Tips

Not every carpenter has all the necessary tools. So many problems have to be solved by cunning, adapting other machines for this. Let's look at a couple of carpentry hacks that work great.

1. How to joint a board with a circular saw

If you don't have a jointer to level a short board, hot glue it to a flat board with the hump facing down. Then install a parallel stop on the circular saw, and running a flat board along it, cut off the protrusions on the workpiece.

Next, the board is torn off and sawed off on the other side by itself. As a result, we get an even workpiece, the same quality as after a jointer and surface planer.

2. How to properly make a corner connection of a board with nails

If you simply drive nails into 2 boards joined at right angles, they will easily pull out.

To do this, just press the workpiece at the break.

If you hammer the central nail straight and the side nails at an angle towards it, the fastening will be much stronger. It’s not so easy to tear off the boards anymore.

3. How to unscrew a broken screw

If the self-tapping screw is twisted and it breaks the thread in the wood, then it cannot be unscrewed. In this case, screw another screw into it from the side at an angle. Then the first self-tapping screw will catch on the tip of the second screw with threads and come out.

4. How to repair a hole or burn in linoleum

If a defect appears on the linoleum, place a whole flap on top of it, matching the pattern. Then secure it with tape.

Now you need to cut a square hole in both layers of linoleum so that the defect falls into it. After this, we get a patch from the top flap, which is ideally glued in place of the lower cut out part.

5. How to fix the edge of the tape

In order not to constantly search for the end of the tape, you can bend it inward under the triangle, adhesive side to adhesive side. The protruding edge is torn off.

6. How to make a self-tapping screw fit into dense wood

Self-tapping screws are reluctant to penetrate dense wood. They make a loud grinding noise and sometimes break. You just need to rub some soap on their threads and they will go in much easier.

7. What to do when there is no compass

If you don't have a compass on hand, then you can use scissors. Secure their position with tape. Then, with one eye, hook onto the self-tapping screw screwed into the center of the workpiece, and insert a pencil into the second. Now, using a circular motion, you can draw an even, neat circle.

8. How to drill straight with a crown if the hole for the centering drill is broken

When drilling thin plywood, it happens that the hole for the center drill of the crown is broken. Then you can screw the disk left over from the previous drilling on top. The crown will align with it and drill everything neatly.

9. Meat mallet

If you have a wooden meat mallet with broken teeth, you can convert it into a mallet.Simply file off the teeth on the striker and reinforce the handle with wood glue.

9. Knot for tightening the cord

Sometimes in the workshop you need to tighten something with a cord, for example, when bending workpieces. To avoid tying knots, you can wrap the lace around the handle of any tool with two full turns. The rope should lie on top. You need to wrap it around yourself.

Then we loosen the first turn and throw it over the rest to wrap it around the handle from below. Once tightened, such a knot will hold tight and is easy to untie.

10. Drilling depth control

To drill a hole of a certain depth, no more and no less, simply glue a flag of electrical tape to the drill. When you touch the surface with it, this will be the desired depth.
