How to make a simple device from scrap metal for quickly bending a pipe into a ring

Sometimes it is necessary to bend a profile pipe into a ring. Considering the rigidity of such rental, it is quite difficult to perform such an operation. But by making a simple device from leftover metal, you can turn a profile pipe into a ring several times faster than using a pipe bender, and with high accuracy.

Will need

Materials:

  • a piece of furniture board or plywood;
  • two screws;
  • metal strip;
  • a piece of metal sheet;
  • a piece of steel angle;
  • bolt, washer and two nuts.

Tools: square, ruler and marker, drill, grinder, strip bending machine, welding, hammer, core, etc.

The process of transforming a profile pipe into a closed ring

We mark and screw two screws into a piece of solid furniture or plywood at a distance of 200 mm from each other. Using these screws, a square and a marker, we draw a circle. We calculate the length of the resulting circle (C) using the formula: “C = π ∙ D = 3.14 ∙ 200 = 628 mm.”

We cut a piece 700 mm long from the metal strip and trim the side edges with a grinder.

We attach a device for bending a steel strip to the workbench and bend the workpiece into a ring.

We evaluate the resulting workpiece with a circle drawn on plywood. We make sure that it is identical to the sample.

We cut off the ends of the ring blank symmetrically to create an open ring.

We cut out a rectangle with sides larger than 200 mm from sheet metal, grind it with a grinder, place an open ring on it and weld it on the inside.

We cut 7 gussets from the remaining sheet metal and weld them from the inside to the semi-ring and the rectangular base along all lines of contact.

On the back side of the base, we install a piece of steel angle in the center in the longitudinal direction and weld it to the base. Using a hammer, a metal brush and a grinder, remove slag from the welds and drops of metal.

We fasten the device to the shelf of the corner in a vice mounted on a workbench. In the base, towards one of the ends of the open ring diagonally, we make a slot using a drill and a grinder.

We insert a bolt into it from below, put a washer on top, screw on a nut, which we lock with a second nut.

We place the beginning of the profile pipe between the bolt and the open ring and bend the pipe along the outside of the mandrel.

When the pipe reaches the second end of the open ring, we move the bent part of the pipe inward and complete the bend with some margin. To facilitate the bending process, we put a pipe on the end of the workpiece.

Using a grinder, we cut the blank from the profile pipe in the transverse direction in the middle of the section with overlapping ends.

If the ends do not match, then we correct them and connect them by welding.
