Felt lacing toy
Educational lacing toy made of felt “Rainbow Turtle”
Laces are recommended for games for children from 1.5 years old. First, the child needs to be shown how to connect the parts using a lace. After he masters this type of game, the tasks can be made more complicated and themed. With the help of lacing toys, the child develops fine motor skills, which has a beneficial effect on speech development. While playing, the baby learns to handle laces. The rainbow turtle will help in learning colors, learn about concepts such as big and small, one and many, and with the help of its parents will learn to count. To make a lacing toy, you don’t need any special sewing skills or a large list of materials. Required:
Multi-colored sewing threads, needles, scissors.
Felt of different colors (thickness 1-1.2 mm, hard), lace (bright color), buttons for eyes and decoration, tool for punching holes and installing eyelets, eyelets (you can do without them). If you have black beads - 12 pieces for the eyes of small turtles.
Preparing the details
The mother turtle consists of a base onto which decorative elements are sewn. The base can be made in any color.
We place the pattern on a sheet of felt (it has been in the hands of a baby, slightly wrinkled), trace it with a fabric marker or pin it with pins, and cut it out.
Next, from the base pattern we make patterns for the main elements:
1 – head (1 part), 2 – leg (4 parts), 4 – tail (1 part). We cut out these elements from brown felt.
3 – triangle (6 parts) – all different colors. 5 – circle (1 piece) different from all the colors used in the turtle.
Baby turtles also consist of a base (brown felt), onto which a brown head and a hexagonal shell are sewn, the color of which repeats the color of the triangle of the mother’s shell.
Cut out 6 bases.
6 head elements and 6 hexagon shells. The details of the head, as in a large turtle, should have an allowance for the shell.
Assembling a toy
We embroider mouths on the heads.
We sew on button eyes for mom, and French knots (beads) for children's eyes.
We sew the head, paws and tail to the base of the large turtle, and the heads of the babies. The threads are matched to the tone of the felt.
One at a time, triangles are sewn onto the mother’s shell and, without changing the color of the thread, a hexagon-shell is sewn onto the baby.
Change the color of the thread, sew on the second triangle and hexagon.
The result is such a bright turtle family.
A circle sewn in the center of the shell will add additional rigidity to the toy. It can be decorated with a figured button.
The big turtle is ready.
View from the back.
We place the small turtles on the mother’s shell and mark the locations for the holes.
We punch holes with a tool for installing eyelets. We can stop here. If desired, you can install a grommet on each hole. I didn't do this. The child is small, there is a risk that the eyelet will be torn off and used for other purposes.
Using a string, we attach the turtles to the mother’s shell.
You can also collect turtles on a string to make improvised beads.
