Nodya - the longest burning fire
Spending the night fishing, hunting or on a hiking trip in winter can have a negative impact on your health if you do not take care of warm clothes and a good heat source. A winter tent with a stove saves you from the cold. But if such accessories are missing, the only hope is a hot fire. One of the best ways to keep warm on long winter nights is Nodya, and you can organize such a heat source quite quickly.
Comparing several types of fires, one cannot fail to note the duration of Nodya’s burning. Thick logs radiate heat all night, and the large smoldering area allows for good heating of the overnight site. The heat-reflecting awning installed at an angle makes Nodya the warmest and longest-lasting fire that does not require constant attention and adding firewood.
How to make a fire Nodya
The greatest difficulty in organizing Nodya is the preparation of firewood. In order for the fire to burn all night, it is necessary to use thick tree trunks. Heating of lying people is possible if there is fuel of the appropriate length so that the heat is distributed evenly.
We took two logs 3 meters long and more than 30 cm in diameter. Now we need to prepare them.We take an ax and cut down a plane from each log. We don’t throw away the wood chips; we will use them for kindling.
Near the first log we drive a wedge or two so that the logs that need to be stacked on top of each other do not roll down.
On top of the first log we place two sticks on the sides perpendicular to the log. And on top of the second log with the hewn surface down. Thanks to our modification, the logs will not roll anywhere. Place the cut chips into the resulting groove. We set fire in several places.
If it is not possible to drive the wedges securely into the frozen ground, then they must be supported.
After 12 hours of continuous burning.
Then everything was extinguished.
The fire could easily have burned for another 2-3 hours, or maybe more. As a result, we can definitely say that it would easily be enough for 15 hours of continuous burning!
Advantages and disadvantages of Nodya
When constructing Nodi, you need to pay attention to the quality of the wood. The material must be dry, without rot or damp places. Otherwise, the fire will be uneven and there will be little heat from it. If we take these requirements into account, Nodya has obvious advantages over other types of fire:
- Such a flame source is capable of heating a resting place even in the most severe frost.
- A person only needs to prepare the logs once and ignite a stable flame. No further intervention or adding firewood is required.
- One of the main advantages is the ability to self-regulate. Depending on the degree of burning of the wood, the fire smolders either weaker or stronger, giving a person the necessary warmth.
The main disadvantage of this design is the need to harvest wood of large length and diameter. Otherwise, the fire will quickly burn out.But if there are no problems with logs, Nodya is considered one of the best options for a source of heat and comfortable rest during the cold season.
