How to make a garden auger from trash
If you need to dig or concrete columns, you must first prepare the holes. To do this you need a drill of a certain diameter. If you don’t have such a tool, you can make it yourself. This is much easier than digging holes with an inappropriately sized drill and then widening or deepening them with improvised means.
To make a drill, you must first decide what diameter and depth the holes are needed. It is important that they exceed the thickness of the columns sufficiently for pouring concrete. At the same time, a drill that is too large is also not needed, since it is difficult for them to work; in addition, its use will result in excess consumption of concrete. For most cases, a hole with a diameter of 200 mm will be sufficient. Having decided on the dimensions, it is necessary to cut a 3 mm disk from sheet steel equal to the desired diameter of the hole.
A hole is drilled in the center of the workpiece for the round timber.
Then the disc needs to be cut.
The cut is made from any point on the circle in the direction to the hole. After this, one side of the disk is bent outward along the cutting line to form a blade.
A rod is inserted into the hole of the disk with the cutting edge facing down and clockwise. At its end, you need to make a longitudinal cut with a depth of 10 mm and a width of 3 mm in advance.
Then the rod is welded to the disk. It is necessary that it protrudes from the blade by 50-80 mm. After this, a tip is welded into the cutout in the rod. It is a triangle cut from 3 mm sheet steel. Approximate dimensions of the tip are 20x35x35 mm.
To make the tool easier to work with, instead of a T-shaped handle, you can make a knob on it, like on a drill for ice fishing. Moving the crank to the side is done starting from the length of the arms. For convenient operation, a shift of approximately 200-300 mm will be sufficient. The greater the offset, the less the load on the hand when rotating the drill. Be sure to put the tubes on the knob. This will prevent your hands from rubbing when working with the tool. When making a knob, it is important that the axis of rotation along the main rod and the upper handle are located in one line.
Before using the drill, sharpen the bent blade on the disk. Sharpening is done one-sided. After this, the drill can be used for its intended purpose. When using the tool, it is advisable to pour lubricant under the tubes so that it does not grind during friction.
Materials:
- sheet steel 3 mm;
- round timber 16 mm;
- 3/4 inch pipe.
