How to reduce the diameter of a steel bar without a lathe
If for any work it is necessary to use rods of non-standard diameter, you can make a special calibration tool to adjust thicker workpieces to the required size. With it, this will take a matter of seconds, and not tens of minutes, as in the case of using a lathe.
Necessary materials:
- large corner;
- metal file made of high quality steel.
Tool making process
This calibration tool is a piece of an angle, on one side of which 3 cutters are welded, aimed at one point. The distance between them is made equal to the diameter of the required rods. Workpieces rotated between the teeth will be sharpened like a pencil in a sharpener.
When making such a device, it will be necessary to pre-drill a corner at the point of convergence of the cutters so that the sharpened rod does not rest during processing. The cutters themselves are made from an old file. Their working part is cut at an angle. It is advisable to harden the cutting edges and then temper the metal.
The cutters are positioned on the corner with the cutting edges above the hole. A gap is left between the points.To do this, a control rod of the required diameter is inserted between them, and everything is reliably scalded. To use the tool, you need to clamp the free part of the corner in a vice. Then the sharpened rod is inserted into a screwdriver and driven between the cutters. Everything takes a matter of seconds.
