How to plant onions before winter to get a record harvest

In late autumn there is more free time, so it can be used for planting onions. This, firstly, will make work easier in the spring, and secondly, it will give a very decent harvest.

The process of planting onions in winter

To plant onions, choose a dry, sunny place. It is better that its predecessors are tomatoes, legumes or potatoes. The ground is dug up or milled with a walk-behind tractor.

It is advisable to add compost or humus to it; adding ash gives good results. Planting onions is done at the same time as winter garlic.
Onions are planted in rows. The distance between the bulbs is 10 cm. The distance between the rows should be at least 25 cm, which will make it possible to process the plantation with a flat cutter.

It is convenient to make holes for planting with a peg using a notched ruler cut from a board. The depth of the holes is such that when planting the bulbs, their neck is 2-3 cm below the ground level.

A spoonful of sand and a planted onion are poured into the bottom of the hole and also sprinkled with sand.

If the planting area is large, it takes a long time to use a spoon, so you can sprinkle sand little by little from a handful.It will create drainage to prevent the bulb from rotting.

The planted beds are leveled with a rake. At the first frost, mulch is applied on top. This can be cuttings of raspberry branches, fallen leaves, hay. In spring, onions will sprout immediately after the snow recedes. It will be possible to collect green feathers when the neighbors have not even started planting. In winter, onions will grow larger and healthier than regular spring onions, so it is more profitable to plant them.
