How to make a powerful hydraulic drive from a starter and an oil pump from a tractor
Nothing can provide such powerful compression as hydraulics. That is why it is used in the designs of bending machines, car lifts, and presses. Let's consider how you can make a universal hydraulic drive from parts from a tractor for almost any installation.
Materials:
- Automotive or tractor starter;
- hydraulic pump 10 l/min;
- sheet steel 4-6 mm;
- pipe 50 mm;
- profile pipe 150x150 mm;
- hydraulic distributor;
- high-pressure hoses;
- oil filter;
- hydraulic oil;
- hydraulic cylinder;
- fittings and adapters.
Hydraulic drive manufacturing process
The first step is to remove the drive with the overrunning clutch from the starter.
It is disassembled to re-sharpen its gear to mate with the hydraulic pump shaft. To do this, you will have to heat it red hot to release the metal. This will facilitate further machining and improve welding.
The gear on the shaft is turned on a lathe. Then an adapter for the hydraulic pump shaft splines is welded to it.After this, the drive with the overrunning clutch is assembled back and installed in the starter.
You need to cut 2 adapter plates from sheet steel, one for the starter mount, and the second for the pump. After that, they are welded together using a piece of pipe. This ensures a reliable grip.
You need to make an oil tank from a 150x150 mm profile pipe. Its capacity must correspond to the parameters of the hydraulic cylinder used later. The pipe blank is welded at the ends with plugs cut from sheet steel.
A window is cut into the tank for refueling. A lid is cut out of a sheet of steel. It and the tank itself need to be drilled and threads cut into the holes. Then the gasket is cut out, which will allow the lid to be tightly screwed on.
The tank is visible in two places. Fittings for high-pressure hoses are screwed into the holes. An oil filter is screwed onto one of them inside the tank.
Next, the pump is connected to the fitting on the tank. To increase the rigidity of the fastening, you need to weld a jumper between the tank and the adapter tube between the pump and the starter.
Using adapters and high-pressure hoses, it is necessary to connect the second fitting in the tank with the hydraulic pump through the hydraulic distributor.
The latter, in turn, must be connected to a hydraulic cylinder.
Thus, after filling the tank with oil and connecting the starter to the batteries, you can control the hydraulic cylinder. To do this, start the engine, then use the hydraulic distributor lever to supply oil to the cylinder. As a result, the hydraulic drive can be used as a power unit in various designs. This could be a bending machine, a press or a lift.
