How to propagate roses by air layering using a banana and a PET bottle without hassle
Roses are usually propagated by cuttings. With this method, only a portion of the cuttings take root, so they need to be made more than necessary. In addition, it takes more than one season to grow a flowering bush from them, since the young plant takes a long time to develop. You can get a new bush with buds much faster using the air layering method.
What you will need:
- Sharp knife;
- banana;
- coconut substrate;
- plastic bottle 0.5 l;
- black package.
The process of forming an air layer
On a rose bush, you need to select a branch of the correct shape that is suitable for creating a new plant. At its base, from bottom to top, an oblique cut is made with a knife to a third of the thickness. Its length should be 2 fingers.
Rub the cut with banana pulp. It contains natural growth stimulants (hormones), which will help the rose produce roots.
The bottom part of a plastic bottle is cut off. You need to get a pot 7-10 cm high. A drainage hole is made in its bottom.
Then the pot is inserted under the wood chips and filled with moistened coconut substrate.
The neck is cut off from the rest of the bottle.A cap for a pot is made from it. A groove is cut into the side so that when putting the cap on it does not rest against the sliver.
Then the pot must be protected from light by wrapping it in a black bag. Periodically, the substrate is moistened through the neck.
After 1.5-2 months, a powerful root will form from the sliver.
The rooted branch is cut from the bush below the pot.
Then the plastic is removed and the new plant is planted in open ground or a pot. With such a root it will bloom the next year.
