How to repair a crack in slate with what you have on hand
Slate that has been sitting for several years may develop cracks through which water seeps out during rainfall. Repairing them with cement mortar gives a short-term result, so in order to avoid having to seal the cracks every year, it is better to do it with paint. Repairs using this method are carried out only in dry weather, so that there is no rain for at least several hours after completion.
Materials:
- Weatherproof paint;
- rags.
Crack repair process
Before starting repairs, it is necessary to clean the slate with a metal brush around the crack to remove dirt and moss.
Then it is painted over with any undiluted weather-resistant paint. You need to apply it in a thick layer.
A flap is placed over the crack.
You need to glue it onto the paint, and then paint it with a second thick layer.
After drying, the patch will hold securely and will not allow water to pass through.
Similarly, you can fix a leak by using silicone sealant instead of paint. It is spread over the slate and is also reinforced with fabric. Working with it is a little more difficult and longer, but the result will be even more reliable.
