How to make a basic device for cutting logs into boards with a chainsaw
Cutting a log with a chainsaw and still getting quality lumber requires a lot of experience and a steady hand. But by equipping the chainsaw with a simple device, even a beginner in this matter can ensure a straight cut. Any adult with basic welding and plumbing skills can make it.
Will need
Materials:
- the rest of the metal sheet;
- a piece of steel strip;
- a piece of steel angle;
- bolts and nuts.
Tools: vice, grinder, scissors, marker and square, welding, hammer, drill, clamps, etc.
The process of making a device for a chainsaw to ensure straightness of the cut
We cut out from thick cardboard or sandpaper the outline of a recess with holes for fixing the guide rail in the removable side protection of the plastic housing.
We transfer and cut out the contours of the template with a grinder onto a metal strip of suitable width with a thickness of 3-5 mm.At the base of the “process” we make a blind slot (recess).
We clamp the “appendage” in a vice and bend it at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the workpiece.
We strengthen the bending angle from the inside with a weld.
We mark and drill holes in the “branch” using the removable side protection of the plastic body as a template.

We screw the plate with nuts to the bolts to fix the guide bar and shorten it by the calculated amount.
We prepare a piece of steel angle of suitable length, and cut a triangular fragment of the required size from an old metal sheet. Using a grinder, remove rust, round corners and edges.
We weld the steel angle to the triangular blank along the edge of the larger side (leg), slightly retreating from the smaller one.
We strengthen the workpiece with the “branch” by welding the gusset and make two longitudinal parallel slots in it with the calculated width and length.
Using the slots as a template, mark and drill two holes in the steel corner.
We secure the part with the slots to the corner using bolts, washers and nuts. We then weld the nuts to the corner.
We attach the assembled structure to the chainsaw using the holes in the “branch”.
We install the triangular guide in the required position in accordance with the required width of the lumber and fix it with two bolts.
When dissolving a log into slabs, a triangular guide slides along the outside of the board and ensures straight movement of the chainsaw guide bar.
