A simple device for controlling the correct angle when sharpening a knife by hand
Manual sharpening requires skill and perseverance, which are often lacking. Without proper experience, when trying to sharpen a blade, it is difficult to maintain the same, and most importantly, the correct angle. As a result, you can spend hours aiming a sharp edge without achieving a result, but only reducing the body of the blade. However, there is a very interesting and effective way that allows you to sharpen using a homemade template - a device.
Will need
The process will require:- a piece of plastic decorative corner 20x20;
- 2 magnets from droplet headphones;
- Super glue;
- protractor;
- marker;
- assembly knife or scissors.
Making a fixture
The device is a small flag that does not directly contact the sharpening stone, so using a plastic corner is quite enough to make it. Naturally, to make an accurate template you will need markings.
You will need a piece of corner 40-50 mm long.Stepping back to the left, you need to mark a distance of 10-15 mm on the template, and then form the required sharpening angle from the resulting point, going to the end of the corner. The angle is selected individually depending on what type of knife needs to be sharpened. It is built using a protractor. For a kitchen blade it is 25-30 degrees. The template is cut along the lines using a mounting knife or scissors.
Next, you need to glue 2 magnets to the inside of the flag. It is convenient to do this on PVC using superglue.
How to sharpen
The device is fixed with magnets on the knife blade close to the butt.
The principle of sharpening is very simple. It is necessary to place a whetstone and attach a knife with a flag to it. When hit by side light, the pattern creates a shadow. It is necessary that it be parallel to the clearance line between the flag and the sharpening stone. If the sharpening angle increases, the lines converge, and if it decreases, they diverge.
Having such a reference point, you can fix the correct angle before each movement and guide the knife correctly. If the blade is long, then, if desired, it is possible to attach several templates to it at once and visually control the angle along its entire length.
Using such a device, you will be able to do every wiring correctly. In this case, sharpening time will be reduced many times over. Working by eye, you can remove the lead edge with a careless movement. An overhead flag will help reduce such risks to a minimum.
