How to make a silicone hose from construction silicone for a fuel line
Various gasoline tools, such as a chain saw, brush cutter or garden vacuum cleaner, are equipped with a fuel line that wears out quickly. The gasoline supply tube used in it becomes rigid over time and cracks appear on it. In order not to look for a replacement in specialized stores, you can simply make a homemade, very flexible soft silicone hose.
To make a flexible hose you will need a mold. To produce it you will need a small wooden block. A hole 3-4 cm deep should be made at its end. To do this, use a drill equal to the desired outer diameter of the hose. After this, you need to drill the block from the side, going out into the end hole.
Next, the head of the nail is cut off with a thickness equal to the inner diameter of the hose. The resulting rod is polished. It is advisable to make its surface perfectly smooth, bringing it to a shine.
In the center of the end hole on the block, you need to drill a recess with a thin drill and hammer a prepared nail into it. This is delicate work, since it is necessary that it be positioned evenly, without deviating towards one of the walls.
Boiling water is poured into a container with a wide bottom. A level of 2-3 cm is enough. Pharmacy hydrogen peroxide is added to the water, about a third of the bottle. Its presence will increase the softness and flexibility of the silicone.
The spout of the tube with sealant is tightly inserted into the side hole of the mold. Next, you need to slowly and smoothly squeeze out the silicone, holding the mold over a container of boiling water. A hose will form at the outlet. You need to try to ensure that it sinks to the bottom without overlapping.
Bubbles will begin to form around the hose in the boiling water. They will come out in 10-15 minutes. After the water has cooled, the tube can be removed and dried. The drying time depends on the specific type of silicone. Usually complete hardening occurs after 24 hours. Information about this is written on the tube with the sealant.
Silicone is not soluble in gasoline, so a hose made from it can be used as a fuel line. Another thing is that it is not suitable for systems where there is high pressure. If you have doubts about such a decision and want to play it safe, you can use not ordinary silicone, but a specialized sealant for gaskets in a tube for a gun. Only it is expensive, so it is not worth buying it specifically for making a hose.
