We connect 2 pipes of different diameters with a PET bottle
If it is necessary to connect pipes of different diameters, for example, when laying sewers, drains and other systems without pressure, plastic bottles can be used. They are suitable for splicing pipes made of different materials, which makes this option of adapters unique and even the only solution of its kind.
To connect the pipes you need to prepare a bottle. From the neck side it is cut so as to obtain a hole sufficient to insert a thinner pipe. Then the bottom is cut off.
The resulting blank is put on a thin pipe and shrinks a little to secure it in place. To do this, it is blown from the neck side with a construction hairdryer. In this case, it is advisable to rotate the bottle so that the shrinkage is uniform and the adapter does not move to the side.
Having attached the adapter to one side, a large pipe is inserted into it.
If necessary, the bottle can be trimmed after fitting if it turns out to be long, for example, when connecting to the knee. Then the rest of the bottle is shrinked in the same way. It is also better to do heating first from the edge to fix the adapter. Then the rest of the bottle’s surface is heated, shifted toward the center.
If there is a place where the bottle does not adhere to the walls of the pipes, then heating is done without stopping at one point so as not to burn through the plastic. After shrinking, the walls of the bottle will become thicker than they were, due to which the resulting adapter will receive additional rigidity. If there is not enough of it, then you can plant one or more bottles on top.
The connection of the adapter to the pipes is quite strong, but if desired, it can be removed, which may be necessary during an inspection. If you need to make the connection completely airtight, then rubber rings from a bicycle inner tube can be put on the pipes before shrinking. Opposite them, clamps are tightened over the adapter.
This method can be used to connect almost any pipe. Nowadays drinks are produced in bottles of different volumes, diameters and shapes, so you can always choose the ones that suit the desired type of compound. This method is also suitable for use in field conditions; in this case, shrinkage can be done by heating the bottle with burning paper or pouring boiling water over it.
What you will need:
- plastic bottle of suitable diameter;
- construction hair dryer;
- scissors or knife.
