How to Repair an Expanding Crack in a Wall to Stop It Reappearing
Uneven shrinkage of the foundation is accompanied by the appearance of cracks on the walls. On difficult soils or with insufficient reinforcement of the base, this process can continue for years. In this case, the problem is solved by using staples and solution.
Since the crack in the wall is constantly expanding, it must first be stopped. If you simply seal it with mortar, it will appear again in a couple of months. To fasten the torn halves of the wall, you will need to hammer in staples in increments of 30-40 cm.
They are made from 10 mm rod. The width of the bracket depends on the wall material. If it is loose aerated concrete, then it needs to be made wide; for brick, 30 cm is enough. The depth of the staples should ideally reach the middle of the wall thickness.
Next, take a hammer drill with a long drill, and drill holes on the wall on the sides of the crack for driving in staples.
Then grooves are cut under them using a grinder with a diamond blade. This way, each bracket will fit into the wall and will not protrude after plastering.
The staples are driven into the wall, and a repair mortar is prepared in the proportion of 1 part cement to 2 parts sand.
Before applying it, the wall is well moistened. The solution is poured into the crack as deep as possible and leveled with a spatula.
The solution prepared in this proportion is very strong, which in combination with staples will allow you to reliably connect the moving wall. It will not crack at this point, but if the foundation has major engineering flaws, then a crack may appear on the side. With this outcome, it is necessary to take radical measures to strengthen it.
