How to make a hot air station from an old soldering iron

For soldering SMD components on boards, it is most convenient to use a hot air gun. If you have an old soldering iron, you can make it yourself by slightly modernizing the existing design. This is usually done very roughly, by hooking a mini compressor directly onto the handle of the soldering iron, but there is a more practical solution.

The process of making a hot air gun for soldering

It is necessary to disassemble the soldering iron and disconnect the power cord.

A copper tube with a centering washer glued to the end, cut from any available heat-resistant material, is placed on its heating coil. It will serve as a new casing that guides the air, and will replace the standard housing. You will need to drill a hole in it opposite the sting mount.
Instead of a standard tip, a thin tube cut from a telescopic antenna is installed. Then the power cord is connected to the spiral with the plug removed.You need to pass it through the handle, and then glue the washer on the copper tube to the apron itself.

The power cord without a plug is passed through a PVC or silicone tube. Its edge needs to be tightly inserted into the handle of the soldering iron and glued.

Next, you will need to select a housing to accommodate the auxiliary equipment or glue it together from sheet plastic.

It contains a compressor, a power supply and a speed controller to change the intensity of air blowing.

The wires for the spiral and the transformer must be powered from one cable with a plug. Separate switches must be installed on them.

The compressor itself needs to be connected to the hose by drilling a side hole in it, and most importantly, sealing it with hot glue.


After collecting the components, you need to close the housing with a lid. Thus, the hot air gun will have 2 switches, separately for heating and compressor. Using the speed controller, you can change the strength of the air flow, adjusting the device for certain soldering conditions.
