How to bring water to the house: horizontal well
This article is a continuation of my popular article and video about “How to bring water to a house without an excavator and a team of diggers" In that article, I explained how, using three special tools, you can dig a deep, narrow trench without spending a lot of effort, time and money.
The work then began with a deep hole, or rather a well, which was also made using my special tools. The fact is that this vertical well was made to connect with a horizontal well, which had already been drilled directly into the basement under the house.
Required
- Hammer.
- Concrete crown with a diameter of 60 mm.
- Drill head.
- Water pipe ¾ inches with threads on both ends, 1000 mm long.
- Threaded cast iron coupling ¾ inch.
- Gas key.
The plan was like this:
In the basement, which is 4 meters long, a horizontal “puncture” well is drilled in the direction of laying the HDPE pipe. This solution also significantly reduces labor intensity and keeps the blind area of the house, lawn and beds intact. A drill head was manufactured to drill a horizontal well. For this, a water pipe with a diameter of 50 mm was used. The front end of the pipe is cut in a spiral. The cutting edge is made of stainless steel and secured with self-tapping screws. Two longitudinal cuts are made along the pipe opposite each other. And the rear end is welded with a round plate to which a piece of ¾-inch thread is welded. Drill pipes were assembled from 4 pipe sections of 1000 mm each with threads on both ends. To connect the pipes I used standard cast iron couplings. As the well deepened, the pipe was extended in successive sections. How to drill? First, of course, we drill the concrete wall of the cellar with a 60 mm crown. I made this hole at a distance of 30 cm from the floor, but it should have been higher, I’ll tell you why later. Then the actual drilling process begins. The drill head is connected to the pipe via a coupling, inserted into the prepared hole in the basement wall, and then using a gas wrench we rotate the pipe clockwise with a slight axial force. My drill head turned out to be very successful for sandy soil. It only had to be rotated slightly, pressing in the axial direction, and it quickly filled with sand. Then the pipe with the head is removed from the well and the sand is poured into a tray located under the hole in the wall. 5-6 penetrations and a meter has been completed, then we wind on the next pipe and continue drilling. I drilled 3.5 meters, this was enough to go under the blind area, bed and end up somewhere under the lawn. Then I started digging a vertical well using a bucket and a long-handled shovel. According to my calculations, I should have met the drill head at a depth of 1.8 meters. But neither at that depth nor at a two-meter depth the meeting occurred.I had to dig another 40 centimeters, only when I felt the metal at the bottom of the well, it was the drill head of a horizontal well. The analysis showed that, under its own weight, my drilling tool deviated from the horizontal and went down about 0.6 m. To avoid this error, it was possible to start drilling not 30 cm from the floor, but about 100 cm. And it is possible to set the drilling angle slightly upward to the surface of the earth. Then the deviation of the well from the horizontal was compensated by the inclination angle. But still, the result was obtained, the wells were connected, and after that I began to dig a trench according to the method described in the first article - https://home.washerhouse.com/en/5840-kak-podvesti-vodu-k-domu-bez-jekskavatora-i-komandy-zemlekopov.html. And then everything is quite simple. The HDPE pipe from the basement is inserted into a horizontal well and pulled out to its full length and laid in a trench. And so on to the well with the main pipe. I left 15 cm in the cellar to connect the tee. I did the wiring in the basement like this. The outlet for the irrigation water supply went to the right, and the outlet for supplying water to the internal water supply went to the left. Well, I think I explained everything. The method is suitable especially if you work on the mistakes. Of course, my advice will not suit everyone, if only because to drill a horizontal well you need to have a large basement under the house.Watch the video
