How to splice wood and make a long cornice
In carpentry practice, over two hundred methods of joining parts are used. Joiners and carpenters often use the end version to increase the length of workpieces and the corner version to connect parts at 90 degrees.
Will need
For work, we will stock up on wooden blocks, for processing which we use:- stationary jigsaw;
- grinder;
- circular saw;
- pencil and square;
- PVA glue;
- clamps.
The process of making a long cornice
To implement the end extension of parts along the length, we will use two methods: “toothed” glue and “on the miter”.“Toothed” connection
In the first case, we make the appropriate markings and cut a symmetrical wedge from the end of one workpiece using a jigsaw. Moreover, the longer it is, the stronger and more reliable the connection will be. Of course, up to a certain limit. We mark the other workpiece “under the wedge” in full accordance with the groove cut in the first workpiece, and also form the required profile with a jigsaw. We grind the mating surfaces on a grinder until they match completely. Then we apply PVA glue to them and fix them with clamps for 30 minutes. It will take 24 hours for the adhesive joint to fully gain strength.Direct connection
The miter connection is even simpler: we cut the ends of the workpieces into a one-sided oblong wedge. We correct the mating planes on the grinder, apply glue to them and also tighten them tightly with clamps. After exposure, the compound can be processed and used for its intended purpose. Next, we process the long workpiece using a router. For angular connection of parts, we will use the most accessible method in the form of straight open through tenons, performed on a circular saw. Also, after processing on the grinder and lubricating the mating surfaces with glue, we tighten the connection with clamps. For reliability, the knot can be strengthened with nails without heads. After the necessary exposure, it is ready for further processing and use.Watch the video
