How to convert a bicycle into an electric bike with a starter instead of an engine
Typically, when converting a bicycle into an electric bike, the motor is installed on the rear wheel. As a result, difficulties are created with the implementation of the braking system. The easiest way to convert is to make a front-wheel drive bike. Let's look at how to assemble it from what you can buy at any auto store, auto repair shop, or find in your garage.
Materials:
- starter 350 W, 12 V - http://alii.pub/5oedpb
- Battery 12V;
- sheet steel 3 mm;
- bicycle sprocket 9 teeth;
- sprocket with ratchet for 18 teeth;
- bicycle chain;
- wires;
- toggle switch
Bicycle conversion process
A 350 W, 12 V starter from a motorcycle will be used as a drive.
A mounting plate is cut out of sheet steel underneath to screw it onto the front fork tube of the bicycle.
The starter must be installed on the plate.
The standard sprocket from the starter needs to be removed. The splines on the shaft are ground.
Then a bicycle sprocket with 9 teeth is welded onto it.
You need to remove the front wheel and press an 18 tooth ratchet onto its hub.
If necessary, the bushing is machined.
Then the wheel is installed back.
The plate with the starter must be screwed to the front fork. You can drill it in several places.
Then a chain is stretched between the sprockets. To be able to regulate its tension, the plate must have grooves instead of holes.
A battery is attached to the bike.
Then you need to connect it to the starter with thick wires.
Plus it needs to be fed through a toggle switch. The latter is attached to the steering wheel.
This electric bike does not lose momentum at all. You can drive it using both the engine and the pedals.
To move on electric power, just turn on the toggle switch. Before braking, the motor power is turned off. Unfortunately, the range of an electric bike with a regular motorcycle battery is small, but sufficient to enjoy the ride. The battery is charged using a car charger.
