How to Make a Wooden Pipe Making Jig with a Full Length Hole
Smooth, smooth wooden tubes can be made at home using only a powerful drill and a special tool that is not difficult to assemble with your own hands. Such blanks are subsequently used for the manufacture of bushings, table lamp stands, handles for spinning rods, door handles, children's hanging swings, etc. If you have a grinder and a welding inverter, assembling the tool will take no more than 1 hour.
Materials:
- 1/2 or 3/4 inch seamless steel pipe;
- drill;
- rod
Tool making process
Before making the tool, you need to determine the parameters of the outer diameter of the wooden tube that you want to obtain. Based on this value, a steel pipe is selected. Its nominal bore must be equal to the outer diameter of the required wooden tube. But here it is important not to overdo it, since when increasing the diameter of the workpieces by more than 3/4 inch, it is possible to overload the drill.
In the selected tube you need to make 2 longitudinal cuts, opposite each other, leaving the edges intact. It is desirable that it be seamless. If there is a seam, then one cut is made along it, and its remains are cleaned from the edges from the inside.
The tube is ground, and 4 oblique teeth are cut from one end of it.
Next, you need to lengthen the drill shank by welding a rod. You will need it to cut a hole in a wooden tube. The weld seam on the connection must be ground flush.
The next step is to weld the drill into the resulting crown using a steel sleeve. The drill should protrude forward by 5-10 mm.
A pipe handle is welded to the side of the tool to clamp it higher in a vice. If they are located at a comfortable height, then it is not required.
To make a wooden tube, you need to hold a stick in the drill chuck and screw it into the tool. He will set the outer diameter and drill the inner hole.
After cutting, the workpiece is ground and its raw shank is cut off.
