How to make a closer for any door from a spring and a bolt
Modern door closers are expensive, rather complex, but often not very reliable designs. This unit is not at all difficult to make with your own hands from leftover materials based on a regular torsion spring for mere pennies. Any adult can make such a door closer.
Will need
Materials:
- bolt with a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 150 mm with a nut;
- torsion spring;
- piece of sheet metal;
- round metal rod;
- spray paint.
Tools: welding machine, vice, hammer, grinder, drill.
Door closer manufacturing process
We pass the bolt rod through the spring.
We cut three rectangular plates from the remaining sheet metal, round the corners and drill two holes along the edges.

We weld the bolt head to the center along the edge of the top of one of the plates, orienting the bolt shaft perpendicular to the plate.
We insert the short hook of the spring into the gap between the plate and the bolt rod until it stops at the head.
We put a long hook on the nut, adjusting its position on the rod so that the spring does not experience any stress.
We weld the spring hooks: the short one to the plate and the bolt head, the long one to the nut.
On top of the long hook of the spring above the nut, we weld the end of the metal rod in the transverse direction.
We weld a nut to the second rectangular plate in the center, which, in turn, is welded to the end of the bolt rod so that this plate is in the same plane as the first plate welded to the bolt head.
We grind all welding seams with a grinder.
We are making a unit for installation on the door leaf. We cut a plate from a steel strip and drill a hole in the center, closer to one edge, slightly larger than the diameter of the rod welded to the long hook of the spring.
We weld a plate with an offset hole to a third plate with two holes along the edges in the center and in the transverse direction.
We clean the welds and paint the resulting assembly (closer).
After the paint has dried, install the door closer on the door block. We attach the assembly with the spring vertically in two places to the top of the door frame post, on which the hinges are installed, using screws.
We put the knot intended for fastening on the door leaf onto the end of a metal rod with a “spare” and also screw it with screws. When the door leaf is opened, the rod turns and twists the torsion spring. When the opening force stops, the spring closes the door leaf.
