How to adjust a window to accurately remove the draft

As the building shrinks, the window geometry may change. As a result, the sash no longer fits tightly to the frame as before, which results in a draft. All this can be corrected by adjustment. You can do this yourself in a matter of minutes.

What you will need:

  • Screwdriver;
  • hex key 4 mm;
  • knife;
  • sheet plastic 3 mm.

Window adjustment process

When you open the window, you can see metal clamps around the perimeter of the frame. Trunnions located opposite on the sides of the sash engage with them, thereby ensuring a tight fit. When you turn the handle, the trunnions move up and enter behind the clamp.

If there is blowing, then not all trunnions fit behind the clamp. To determine which of them need to be adjusted, you need to close the window. Then you need to take the closed sash and try to pull it away from the frame. In places where it dangles opposite the clamps, adjustment is required.

The simplest adjustment is made by moving the sash relative to the frame. This is done with a hex wrench. To do this, you need to turn the adjusting screw on the bottom hinge.By twisting it, we pull the bottom of the frame towards the hinge, and by twisting it, on the contrary, we move it away. The adjustment at the top is also done with a key, but on an open sash.

With this adjustment, you can adjust the position of the sash so that the left and right trunnions overlap the clamps. If you overdo it with the rotation of the screws, then only the right eccentrics will be pressed or vice versa.

It happens that the trunnion does not reach the vertical clamp. In this case, you need to unscrew it with a screwdriver and move it so that the parts can fit together. The clamp is held on by just one screw, so rearranging it is easy. You can determine that it needs to be moved by closing the sash and looking into the gap between the frame.

Sometimes it is not possible to adjust the fit by adjusting the hinges, since the trunnions only reach the clamps on one side. One has only to move the sash to the left, and it no longer reaches the right, where there were no problems. Then you can cut out a lining from sheet plastic and place it between the clamp and the frame. He will move forward and be able to reach the eccentric.

If the gasket still does not allow the clamp to be moved forward enough, then it is worth moving the sash with the trunnion onto it. To do this, pry up the bead with a knife and remove it. Then a lining is placed between the glass unit and the frame opposite the clamp. The gap for this can be widened by using a plastic or wooden spatula. Due to the gasket, the frame will stick out in this place and will already reach the clamp. This way you can easily move the sash 4-5 mm to the right or left.

The described adjustment allows you to achieve complete mating of the trunnions and clamps. If this is not enough, then the window has greatly changed its geometry as a result of the task drawdown. Then you will have to disassemble the slopes and level it from the wall with mounting wedges.
