How to make a turbofan from a regular cooler. Increased speed by 3 times
If suddenly you need a powerful turbofan with speed control for your projects, you can make it yourself from a computer cooler. Considering that the speed of a computer fan rarely exceeds 1000 rpm, after our modification the rotation speed of the impeller will increase more than 3 times.
What you need
- CD drive from laptop.
- Computer fan.
- Speed controller with controller "Simonk" 30A - http://alii.pub/61pqks
Converting a cooler into a turbofan
We disassemble the laptop drive and remove the main disk drive motor from it.
This is a conventional three-phase electric motor with a four-wire system. We don't need a common wire. Only 3 phase wires need to be extended. We do this using enameled wire.
Peel off the label on the back of the cooler and remove the plug. Using tweezers, remove the retaining ring.
We remove the impeller. Using pliers, break off the axle.
At the base of the fan we also cut off the axis with a Dremel.
To make the transition from a new engine to an impeller, it is necessary to make a bushing. This is done using a 3D printer or on a lathe.
We install the bushing into the impeller, then tightly insert the electric motor. For reliability, you can fix it with superglue.
We install the electric motor with the impeller on the base and fix it with glue on the reverse side.
To start a three-phase motor from direct current, a controller with speed control is used. You can use store-bought or homemade.

We connect the controller to the fan terminals and check the operation. The circuit is powered by 5V.
The impeller rotation speed is now 3000 rpm. This is 3 times faster than the original speed of a computer cooler.
