Simple sliding door latch with push button to open
Doors, for their main purpose, should be closed and open only for the passage of people. To ensure these opposite conditions, a variety of latches are installed on doors, including sliding ones. For example, they can be made from leftover metal strips and do not require special knowledge or skills.

Manufacturing process of mechanical latch for sliding doors
We first bend one end of the 200x18 mm steel strip 90 degrees, and then continue bending about another 60 degrees.
We do the same with a steel strip 25 mm wide, but fix the bend at 90 degrees. Cut off the bent end from the rest of the strip, stepping back some distance from the bend.
We bend the second end of the 200x18 mm strip twice on a bending device so that the end part is parallel to the main part of the plate, but lies in the plane in which the bent end of the plate is located.
Using the same bending device, we make something like a spring from steel wire, consisting of 2-3 turns.
We cut the resulting spring in the transverse direction and get two rings. We weld one of them across and vertically to a narrow plate on the side opposite the bend and close to it.

In the bent part of the narrow plate in the longitudinal direction and in a fragment of the plate 25 mm wide, we drill two holes across it. We put a compression spring on the bolt and screw the nut until it is lightly compressed.
We fasten a piece of strip 25 mm wide to the vertical post of the door frame at the estimated height from the floor with two screws so that the bent end is on the side of the door leaf.
We drill a through hole in the door leaf post, placing it opposite the center of the fragment screwed to the door frame post. We insert a bolt with a spring and a screwed nut from the outside and screw a second nut onto the end of the bolt from the inside.
We insert the bent end of the 200x18 mm strip into engagement with the bend of the fragment on the door frame pillar and screw it to the door leaf with two screws. In this position, the latch is closed and the door cannot be opened.
By pulling the bar towards us by the ring, we disengage the latch and the door leaf rolls back freely. When the door leaf is closed, the bent part of the plate slides along the upper edge of the fragment on the door frame pillar and, due to elastic forces, engages with it. The door turns out to be closed.
In order to open a closed door from the outside, it is enough to press the button from the bolt, overcoming the resistance of the spring, and disengage the contacting elements of the latch. By removing the pressure from the bolt, we again ensure that the door can close automatically.
