How to Renew a Clay Flower Pot
With the onset of spring, not only nature awakens, but also the desire to create. If you have an old clay flower pot at your disposal, you are incredibly lucky. It is these textured flowerpots that are valued in fashionable Scandinavian interiors. But if your aesthetic perception differs from the descendants of the Vikings, and the old pot does not make you want to decorate the windowsill, then this master class will show you how to turn it into a stylish piece of furniture.
Materials for work:
- 1. Plant pot;
- 2. Putty;
- 3. Fine-grained sandpaper;
- 4. Acrylic primer and paints (silver, purple, white);
- 5. Varnish for craquelure;
- 6. Masking tape;
- 7. Scissors, pencil;
- 8. A can of varnish.
Sequence of work
First, clean the pot, sand it if necessary, wash it thoroughly and dry it.
Apply the putty with a small spatula or your hands, trying to distribute it evenly throughout the pot, and leave to dry.
Use fine-grained sandpaper to smooth the surface, and to avoid sneezing from the dust, it is better to wear a medical mask.
Cover the pot with white acrylic primer and wait for it to dry.
Paint it with silver paint in two or three layers.
Let's move on to the most crucial moment. Now we need to determine how many and how wide the stripes will be on the pots, so we measure the circumference of the pot and divide it by the required number of strips. We mark with a pencil the places of their future location and seal every second strip with masking tape. This will help make them smoother.
Apply one-component craquelure varnish and set the pots aside for a couple of hours.
Mix white and purple paint to obtain a delicate pastel shade. Lightly touching the pot, check whether the craquelure varnish has dried. If your finger barely sticks to the surface, you can apply colored paint. The brush should only be moved in one direction, and note that the thicker the layer, the larger the cracks.
Remove the masking tape and cover the entire surface of the plant pot with spray varnish. It is not recommended to use a brush or varnish from a can to avoid damaging the crackle effect.
Our product is ready! This pot will fit perfectly into the interior of a bedroom, nursery or kitchen. Geranium, flowering Kalanchoe, clivia, balsam are best suited for growing in it; sansevieria, echeveria and cactus will also look good. If you plan to place the flowerpot in the kitchen, you can plant rosemary, mint or lavender in it.
