How to make a powerful vice from a diamond screw jack
Typically, diamond-type screw jacks are used on passenger cars. Their main purpose is to lift the car to change a wheel. But based on them, you can independently make very powerful vices with high compression force.
To make a vice we will need the following materials and products:
Also for work you will need a bench vice, a drilling machine, a grinder, a welding machine, a pendulum saw, a metal file, a tap with a crank, etc.
We use a channel as a base and guide, the size of which is selected based on the results of a strength calculation. We weld vertical posts from the same channel to the base at both ends.
In the wall of the base along the longitudinal axis of the vertical posts, we make holes on a drilling machine using a core drill.
Between the holes, according to the markings, we cut out a groove with a grinder, which we process along the length with a metal file, removing burrs and rounding the edges.
Using a pendulum saw, we cut off a fragment of the required length from the channel from which the base is made. Use a grinder to remove the corners of the shelves at 30 degrees from one end.
We cut off a fragment from the metal strip and weld it to the end of the channel from the side with intact shelves.
We drill two holes in its wall closer to the opposite end and cut threads into them.
Between the shelves in front of the bevels we insert a strip of metal of sufficient thickness and weld it there. We drill a hole in its center and also cut the thread.
We weld the plate, which moves freely along the groove of the base, to the end of the movable clamp and drill two through holes in it, located longitudinally closer to the ends. Then we cut threads into them.
We install the movable clamp on the base so that the guide bar fits into the longitudinal groove. We screw the screw jack through two holes in the lower stop with bolts and nuts to the vertical post.
Next, through the hole in the upper stop of the jack, using a bolt and washer, we connect it to the movable clamp.
We cut off the plate wider than the transverse dimension of the groove and drill two holes in it along the length opposite the holes in the guide bar of the movable clamp.
We turn the vice over and place a washer on the holes in the guide bar. We place a wide strip with two holes on top of the groove in the base wall and connect these two elements with bolts.
We cut two fragments of equal length from a wide strip. We drill two holes in them along the long edge and drill them for the bolt heads. We fix them on fixed and movable clamps using the corresponding threaded holes.
Insert a long bolt into the holes in the jack power screw bracket and screw a nut onto the thread.
Our vices are fully assembled and ready to use.
